Last month's big "Evolution of the Motorcycle" show staged by the Hawke's Bay Classic Motorcycle Club has had a welcome, and tasty, result for Girlguiding's Omatua camp at Rissington.

As club president Eric McDougall explained, the camp's barbecue had become a victim of age, not to mention lots of good use through the years.

"So we decided to get them a new one," he said.

The shining new $1200 set-up was delivered and set up by members of the club yesterday and what better way to christen it than have a bit of a cook-up.

They also delivered a cheque for $900.

The donations were part of the club's devotion to the camp, which they give a "bit of a makeover" to once a year.

Mr McDougall said the club members adopted the Rissington camp a couple of years ago after a regular rally site they had long used became unavailable.

"We were looking for a new camping spot and Rissington came up."

The club approached Girlguiding New Zealand which runs the camp and offered to do their bit to keep it looking smart, and got the ok to stage their rallies there.

"So we look after some of the general maintenance and the trees and things and they let us use a part of the camp for our rallies."

When it was noticed that a new barbecue was required the club decided to step in.

The motorcycle show was staged as a fundraiser for the club's new kitchen, the Omatua Camp and the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter service.

Skipping for a worthy cause

Mr McDougall said the club was now putting together the final figures from the show and the result was also likely to be good news for the service and would be put together some time over the next week.

"It's such a good cause and we've done a few collections for them before."
