At least two Hastings petrol stations ran out of 91 Octane fuel yesterday as prices sank to the lowest level in five years.

The unmanned pumps at Pak 'N Save pumps in Heretaunga St and the Mobil Stortford Lodge station in Pakowhai Rd, both offering the standard petrol low of 176.9c per litre, had run out by 8pm.

A notice on Pak 'N Save pumps said a further delivery was expected later in the evening.

BP's Stortford Lodge still had petrol in the tanks at the same price.

Prices hadn't been as low since 2009 and Hastings' reputation as the centre for the lowest prices was highlighted by differences just within Hawke's Bay.

The cheapest 91 Octane fuel in Napier last night was 181.9c a litre.

Most prices were subject to voucher and card discounting.

Sources said deliveries had been unable to match the demand in Hawke's Bay during the holiday period.
