Napier and Taradale are set to have on-street parking for free this Christmas.

Napier and Taradale are set to have on-street parking for free this Christmas.

It may not be all the Christmases coming at once but Napier and Taradale are set to have on-street parking for free to open the seasonal festivities in the city over the next fortnight.

The waiving of parking fees is being offered for the Napier central business district next Saturday, the day of Napier's Christmas parade, and in Taradale on December 5, the day of the village's Christmas shopping festival.

A report on the issue will be discussed on Wednesday by the Napier City Council city development committee, estimating losses of revenue to the council of about $4200 in the city and $700 in Taradale, but saying it is covered by revenue in the parking fund.

Committee chairman councillor Keith Price is recommending to the committee that it approves the waiver and that it is immediately adopted by the council.

The report says the waiving of on-street parking fees in Napier on July 11 this year had been a successful promotion for the council and for businesses.
