They were sluggish and had only one goal in the first half.

So what did TSB Bank Napier City Rovers acting coach Chris Greatholder say at halftime to open the floodgates with six in the second spell?

"I told the boys to be patient and be hungry and aggressive to win the ball back," Greatholder said after they were tied 1-1 at halftime against last-placed Tawa in Napier yesterday.

The table-topping hosts, who play Wellington Olympic this weekend, lacked secondary movement with midfielders not staggering in attack.

It was Karl Romijn who scored the first goal in the 13th minute with a speculator from about 38m to catch goalkeeper Reuben Parker on the hop for a 1-0 lead.

It wasn't until the 34th minute that the hosts got the 1-1 equaliser from Angus Kilkolly who had latched on to a long ball and beaten goalkeeper Lance Ramaekers to it before curling it in from an oblique angle.

Whatever acting coach Chris Greatholder said at the break, Kilkolly made it 2-1 from point-blank range soon after kickoff after a deft Miles John cross from the right flank which the Tawa defence misread.

Not done, two minutes later it was centre midfielder Ryan Tinsley's turn to nod the ball into the net from a corner kick, 3-1.

In the 62nd minute, Tom Biss joined the party, 4-1, driving the ball home from just outside the 18m box after John challenged Ramaekers who parried the ball.

Three minutes later Kilkolly claimed his hattrick, 5-1.

Tinsley got his second in the 70th minute, 6-1, and it was time for the Jose Quijada-coached men in red to start blushing.

Midfielder Mike Ramaekers collected a red card with a mindless tackle on substitute Greatholder. The offender kicked a chair on the way out.

Tinsley added salt to Tawa wounds in the 88th minute with a hattrick, 7-1.

Winger Josh Stevenson received a memento from club captain Malcolm Wilson for his 150th Central League game for the Blues.

In other games, Petone beat Palmerston North Marist 3-1, Western Suburbs beat Wairarapa United 5-3, Stop Out thrashed Wellington Olympic 4-0 and Miramar Rangers beat Lower Hutt 2-0.
