"He could have had his moment in the sun tomorrow or even before that," Angell says of McDonald who fellow 19-year-old Hill eclipsed.
"Sometimes it's the exuberance of youth and it was a little disrespectful towards the group."
He says McDonald and Hill arrived in the Bay to gain experience at an elite level and, in keeping with his philosophy of more than one player competing for a position, he expected the pair to push each other.
After much deliberation Angell opted for Englishman Hill to start but McDonald didn't appreciate that and didn't want to hang around.
"Sometimes we may make the correct decisions and sometimes we may not be right."
It didn't sit comfortably with Angell that someone with McDonald's mindset had the propensity to destabilise the equilibrium of the team culture and the game.
It rankles with the coach that McDonald expected a monopoly on the position and yet he wasn't in a position to do that with other franchises.
"Why not go to Waitakere United, Auckland City or Team Wellington and make that demand?
"Why should it be any different here?"
Not having found traction with the Wanderers Soccer Club, McDonald put his feelers out and Bay United threw him a lifeline.
"The minute Billy [Stockill] was brought into the environment as No2 Adam left," he says, adding his troops had only one glove man (Hill) when they played away against the Wanderers in round three on November 16.
Angell says Baxter will "acquit himself" because he expects the other players on the field to make it a quiet time for him.
English striker Saul Halpin also is out today because of chicken pox.
"We know he's a big kid but now it's confirmed," he says with a laugh.
WaiBOP are coming off a 2-0 win over the Wellington Phoenix at Eden Park last weekend.
Fourth-placed Bay United, who beat Southern United 3-1, will have a better break if they win but Angell says conceding soft goals will make life harder.
