With 130 young athletes taking part in the Dannevirke Athletics Club's regular Wednesday night meet, organisation is key.
Last week, Kelly Gillard and her volunteers marshalled children in a whirlwind of activities, with the emphasis on fun.
"You are learning to run, jump and throw and make friends," Gillard said.
"You are trying to improve yourself, but it's all about fun."

Gillard said she wanted all the young athletes to turn up and "just enjoy yourselves".
With wide smiles on faces, the youngsters had done just that.
As a small reward for the volunteers, every parent who picked up a stopwatch or helped with the field event was rewarded with a free sausage after a night of fast-paced action.
