Now, with barriers in place and stop/go lights operating, heavy traffic has been banned from the road, and other motorists are being warned to avoid it too.
The district council was also warning all motorists to drive with care, with low-lying water on the roads yesterday.
The Pahiatua Track was closed, with a tree down and a large slip on the Palmerston North side, with rock falls in the Manawatu Gorge reducing it to one lane.
McKinley, Range and Broomfield roads in Woodville were all closed due to flooding.
The council's resilience manager, Paddy Driver, said he was expecting a nine-hour break in the weather yesterday, which would take the pressure off.
"The Manawatu River is the only one causing concern at the moment," he said.
Also causing concern was the continued flooding of a property on Victoria Ave.
Two pumps were needed overnight Tuesday because one couldn't cope with the volume of water flooding the low-lying rental home.
Water covered the floor on the lower level of the home on Tuesday and although the council provided stormwater services with kerbing and channelling, chief executive Blair King said the flooding wasn't related to its stormwater systems.
However, while Mr King had advised property owners to talk to their neighbours about how to get the stormwater into the council system, he and district mayor Tracey Collis were willing to help facilitate a solution.
