A part-time fisherman charged with burgling a fishing launch at a mooring near Napier will be at sea while he makes up his mind whether to plead guilty.

Appearing in Napier District Court today, Matthew Paul Jenssen, 28, of Napier, entered no plea to the charge of burgling the Renegade, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' jail.

But he was remanded at large for six weeks, a longer-than-normal leeway, granted by a registrar because he will be at sea on a fishing boat, returning in time to be back in court on July 6.

Jenssen was arrested on Monday after fishing rods and other items were taken from the Renegade while it was berthed at Meeanee Quay's Pier 2, on the Westshore side of the Napier inner harbour.

The arrest happened after a police scene-of-crime investigator found a key in the grass near the mooring and linked it to a car parked nearby, with a man asleep inside, and some of the missing property from the boat in the rear of the vehicle.
