Firefighters battle blaze in Gisborne

Firefighters have brought a large scrub in Gisborne under control.

Residents were evacuated from their homes after firefighters were alerted to the blaze in Kaiti shortly before 2pm.

Police had put cordons in place and urged motorists and residents to avoid the Endcliffe Rd area.

The fire is now under control and residents were allowed to return just before 3.30pm.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said the blaze had measured about 60m by 60m.

Two fire crews were in attendance and rural crews and a helicopter had been called for assistance.

There have been no reports of injuries.
