Napier police say the woman killed in yesterday morning's smash at Awatoto had been driving erratically and crossed the centre line before veering into the path of a truck.
The name of the Napier woman would not be released until formal identification had taken place but she was in her mid
60s and was the sole occupant of the car.
Police want to hear from anyone who saw her silvery-green Mitsubishi Colt hatchback on State Highway 2 before the crash happened at 7.10am, about 1km north of the Waitangi Rd turn-off.
The truck's driver was not injured and police said he "tried to take evasive action".
Anyone with information should contact Napier police.
