It's not all "doom and gloom," but a new group wants to do something about the future of the environment in Hawke's Bay. Baywatch HB wants to help people make submissions to their local and regional councils that are working on the list of Long Term Council Community Plans (LTCCPs) thatwill direct policy for the next 10 years. Spokeswoman Liz Remmerswaal said the group was passionate about enhancing the environment and planned to make a difference in the region. "There is a growing feeling we can no longer rest on our laurels in New Zealand and that we need to take a lot more care of planet earth if we wish to survive," she said. "However, we are not at all doom and gloom merchants and we plan to have a fun time together and be very optimistic and hopeful. What we all share is a concern for how we leave things for our future generations, and this affects everyone." The group was founded late last year and 25 members, including representatives from Forest and Bird, Cape Kidnappers Protection Society and Sustaining HB Trust, spent Saturday night on Waimarama marae where they discussed their vision for the future of Hawke's Bay. They decided more vigilance was needed to protect land, water, and air quality and want to promotes creative guardianship of the environment to ensure ecological integrity and sustain humanity, Mrs Remmerswaal said.
