The 74-year-old man who died in a crash in Havelock North is thought to have had an underlying medical condition.

Police have released the name of an elderly motorist who died following a dramatic crash on Havelock Rd last Wednesday.

He was Rodger Marland Cate, 74, of Hastings.

It's understood Mr Cate had a medical condition before crashing his car into a traffic island while travelling towards Hastings about 11.20am.

His vehicle eventually came to rest on a pedestrian barrier.

Chest compressions were administered at the scene and he was taken to hospital by St John Ambulance where he died early on Friday.
