Eight fire appliances called to Pandora blaze

Thick black smoke ballooned from the Ravensdown fertiliser plant in Pandora this morning as flames ravaged a conveyer belt in the roof cavity.

At least eight fire appliances attended the blaze, which started about 11.30am in the building on Severn St.

A Hawke's Bay Today photographer said fire crews contained the flames and remained on site, dampening down.

The plant had been evacuated and there were no reports of injury.

Police set up cordons on Prebensen Drive and Thames St, both of which were still in place.

Napier SPCA stepped in to rescue two horses in a nearby paddock, who were panicked by the fire.
