Violence is never the answer - especially in sport.

So it is a shame to hear that a local league match had to be called off early because the scrappy game erupted in violence.

This was more than a jovial shove, at least three Warriors were cited by spectators for throwing punches and it warranted a visit from the police.

It also took the shine off the Panthers' 42-6 win.

A touch judge, who volunteered his time, got a slap in the face for his troubles.

I wouldn't blame him if he hung up his boots permanently. He is considering pressing charges against the players.

League officials met last night to discuss the matter.

It was unanimously decided harsh action must be taken against the players involved.

This foolish behaviour could now end their league playing days.

Hawke's Bay Rugby League chairman Kevin Tamati knows that tempers can flair on a rugby field.

But officials were "off limits". Understandably he was "disgusted" at what happened.

Volunteers were "few and far between" as it was. Incidents like this would just make it harder to attract helpers.

The players would get a penalty worthy of the crime, he said.

A decision on what that would be was expected by the end of the week.

A tough penalty is needed not just for those involved but to deter others from similar behaviour.
