It has been said that competition is the spice of sports but if you make spice the whole meal, you'll be sick.

So according to this, the price of flights in and out of our region should become a lot healthier with the arrival of Jetstar.

The Australian-owned airline announced it would be flying to four new regions - Nelson, Napier, New Plymouth and Palmerston North - with five new routes between Auckland and Wellington. The flights will take off from the beginning of December, in time for the peak tourism season.

The airline kick-started the competition with a limited number of $9 flights yesterday.

People were buzzing on social media about snapping up the cheap flights while the region's movers and shakers were touting the benefits that would follow the announcement.

Not only would it save locals money but would encourage more tourists to the region and possibly even sway those thinking about swapping life in the big smoke for the Bay, they claimed.

Long-time advocate, Hastings district councillor Simon Nixon, said it was a "game changer".

He was one of the first to grab the promotional fares - saying it was a good chance to take his wife to Auckland for her birthday.

Lower flight prices could even help Mission Estate Winery re-establish its annual concert, making it more affordable for out-of-towners to attend, the winery's chief executive said. Now it's up to us to support the new airline in town so it remains a viable option for the company.

While Air New Zealand provides a good service there is always room for improvement and a little competition will just keep them honest.
