In a very rare occurrence three senior cricket matches were played at Dannevirke on Saturday February 20 and all three ended with wins to the locals.

It was rare because the Dannevirke Sports Club Women had their first win in their first season playing in the Manawatu Competition.

With virtually no experience the team struggled early in the season, losing heavily but persevering and slowly getting better. The addition of new players and coaching helped the team tick off benchmarks for the season and last week they almost batted their 20 overs making 117 against United but not defending the total.

This week the team put on 134/9 with contributions of 34 from newcomer Sam Mackinder and a good partnership between Jackie Boustead (20) and Anna Clarke (30) set them up for an exciting contest.

This time they won, dismissing Feilding for 97, Emily Harvey taking two wickets for seven runs in three overs and the other wickets being shared.

Meanwhile the Premier 2 men played Freyberg on the Domain grass wicket and put on 231/6 in their 50 overs, two Georges – Collins and Larsen scoring 82 and 80 respectively to anchor the innings.

With captain Andrew Galloway in fine form taking four wickets and Dwayne Webber two Freyberg were all out for 216.

Next to them the Premier 3 Yellow side had Palmerston North Boys' High 4ths 180/9 wickets after 40 overs, Andrew Boyce taking three wickets and the rest shared.

Led by captain Cameron Walker with a great 59 the team passed the total with three overs to spare.

In the morning on the same wicket the Dannevirke Sports Club Year 5-6 primary team came up against a tough Freyberg side, which consisted mostly of Year 6 players. Dannevirke had won its grade before Christmas but their seniors had gone up a grade in February.

The team had still managed a good win over Bush the previous week but a total of 67 this week was never going to be enough. However all players in this grade get to bowl two overs and bat four so they are all gaining valuable experience, which will stand them in good stead when they join premier teams a few years from now.
