Specsavers and New Zealand Cricket are recognising and rewarding amateur cricket umpires throughout the country, with the launch of the annual nationwide search for "Specsavers' Favourite Local Cricket Umpire".
Dannevirke residents are encouraged to nominate volunteer umpires in their region for the chance to reward their unsung heroes with amoney-can't-buy prize pack that includes golf with the Black Caps and one-on-one training with a top umpire.
Devon Hotel Central Stags captain, Kruger Van Wyk, says: "Umpires are a crucial driving force behind our game and Specsavers' competition is a great way to put these volunteers in the spotlight and recognise their time, energy and commitment, as they're the real sporting heroes."
Specsavers Palmerston North optometrist, Paul Dickson sees the beginning of the cricket season as a good time for everyone, not just outdoor sporting officials, to think about their eye health.
A recent survey found that only one third of Kiwis who wear prescription glasses wear prescription sunglasses.
"It's worrying to learn that only one in three spec-wearers choose to invest in polarised prescription sunglasses for when they're outdoors. Keeping your eyes protected and maintaining optimal vision should be a priority for all this summer."
Six finalist umpires will be selected from around the country and will each receive $500 to put towards training and club facilities, signed Black Caps memorabilia and a voucher for two pairs of designer glasses from Specsavers, including prescription sunglasses.
From these finalists the national winner will be selected, who will win a trip for two to Auckland to attend the New Zealand Cricket Black Caps annual golf day.
