For Dannevirke's Charlie Timu working as a Ruahine Maori Warden is about helping to look after our community and building relationships.

Charlie has been a Maori Warden for nine years and is the co-ordinator of the local group with coverage extending from Pahiatua north to Ormondville.

Now she's looking for new recruits keen to help.

"Our wardens need to be trustworthy, have good self-esteem, a knowledge of the community and be caring," she said.

The positions are voluntary, but Charlie said the rewards come from the satisfaction of knowing you are there when needed.

"If I can help one person that's wonderful. I often work with our Kaumtua, supporting them in whatever way I can. It can be driving them to medical appointments, or visiting them in hospital."

Charlie also works closely with school principals, the police and the Department of Justice and the Ruahine Maori Wardens offer clothing, food and budgeting help out in the community.

-If you believe you meet the criteria to be a Ruahine Maori Warden, phone Charlie on 027 521 8874.
