Young men from the district have begun a 19-week course in building and carpentry which could lead to new careers, thanks to collaboration between Tararua Community Youth Services and the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) in Hawke's Bay.

"This is an awesome opportunity for the 17 guys," EIT tutor Campbell Johnston said.

The EIT certificate in foundation studies, construction, is based at the Carnegie Centre in Allardice St. The programme includes how to manage life after school, learning about the skills of the trade and the practical skills of carpentry and building. It is being run in conjunction with Winz and the Tararua Learning Centre.

Last week students spent time at the Dannevirke Domain on team-building exercises, with some fitness training built-in as well.

The course is split 50/50 between theory and practical course work and the students will also be undertaking three community projects. The first will be a shelter and seating area around the skateboard area in Allardice St.

For one young man taking part in the course, the opportunities are endless.

"I'm going to go to Christchurch when I get through this and work as a builder," he said.

The course is also backed by Tararua District mayor Roly Ellis who said he is grateful to EIT for their help in setting the course in motion.

"We are also talking with them about future courses in farming, light engineering, administration and hospitality," he said.

"Good skills-training for people who have left school and are unemployed has been lacking in Tararua.

"The main problem has been transport to the different training establishments," he said.
