Christmas in the Park, which was due to have started in Cornwall Park, Hastings at 3pm today, has been cancelled because of the rain.

A Hastings District Council spokesman confirmed that the adverse weather conditions had resulted in the event being cancelled.

He said it was likely that the carol singing segment of the show, which would have been held from 7pm today, would now be done at the Hastings City Night Market on Thursday.

"It is likely that the carol singing will be taken to the night market on Thursday. We need to make that decision," he said.

Meanwhile drizzle did not stop Jackie Thomas giving a full performance at Cox Partners Christmas at the Park at Anderson Park, Napier last night.

Many of the large crowd stayed to enjoy the New Zealand X Factor winner Jackie Thomas. An enthusiastic audience were treated with a great mix of songs and Christmas carols including a surprise guest, Tom Bachelor, who was X factor's third place finalist. Bachelor and Thomas sang a duet together.

Despite the light rain, the concert performed 4.5 hours of the 5 hours of planned acts to an excited audience.

"The atmosphere here is truly amazing, so many people really having a great time from kids to adults alike," said David Trim, event organiser.

Because of the wind a planned fly over by a tiger moth aeroplane had to be cancelled at the last minute. The flyover was to coincide with a special segment of the show to commemorate the centenary of World War One.

"We were still able to play a special video clip of Christmas in the trenches at war and talk about the soldiers that went to war from Hawkes Bay," David said.
