He has toured New Zealand and the world extensively, and next month singer/songwriter/guitarist Paul Ubana Jones will hit Waipawa for a one-off concert.
Brought to the district by the CHB Music Society, he will play at the CHB Municipal Theatre on Saturday, November 7, and promises concert-goers the opportunity toget to know the "essence" of Ubana Jones and his sound.
He describes his music as "acoustic soul - a synthesis of acoustic styles, blending English and American folk tunes with Afro rhythm".
It is a style that has been described by past reviewers and audience members as "a whole-of-body experience - for the player and the listener", and "inspiring".
Ubana Jones has spent more than 43 years as a professional musician and has played with Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo', Tuck and Patti, Crowded House and Norah Jones.
The ability and freedom to blend the genres is something he cherishes, and likes to pass on to others, he says.
"When I go to school workshops I tell the kids to diversify, to listen to the stuff of their generation but also know something about the sonata form, Beethoven and Bach - it's an incredible journey if you embrace it."
Born in London, Ubana Jones moved to New Zealand in the 1980s.
