Toxic algal bloom discovered in a section of the Tukituki River has led to a health warning for people and animals to avoid contact with the river in that area.
Health NZ Te Whatu Ora issued a health warning on Wednesday for the Tukituki River near Walker Rd in Waipawa, close to where the Waipawa River joins the Tukituki.
The warning follows the discovery of potentially dangerous levels of toxic algae (microcoleus) there by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.
People should avoid swimming in the area and animals, particularly dogs, should not be allowed near the water until the health warning has been lifted.
The regional council is monitoring the river and the public will be advised of any changes in water quality.
National Public Health Service medical officer of health Dr Nicholas Jones said the algae looked like dark brown or black mats and could produce toxins harmful to people and animals.

“Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips,” he said.
“If you experience any of these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately; also, let your doctor know if you’ve had contact with dark brown [or] black algal mats or water in this area.”
