A car has caught on fire in Waipukurau.

A Fire spokesman said one fire appliance was currently attending the scene and two water tankers were on their way.

Police and the Waipukurau volunteer fire brigade attended the fire on Tukituki River berm between SH2 and the river.

It is unknown what caused the fire which also burned 10 metres of grass and vegetation.

Deputy chief fire officer Steve Walker said "lucky we had the recent rain," as three weeks ago as it would have been a different story.
