Central Hawke's Bay has the Tour de Beautiful on two wheels and the Tararua, the tour de spectacular, a stunning journey across country from Dannevegas to Herby on four.

The Dannevirke to Herbertville 4x4, 125km scenic trek was an incredible opportunity to experience some of the most unique and beautiful places in the Tararua District and out to the edge of Central Hawke's Bay.

Rally participants stop at Taumata whakatangi hangakoauau o tamatea turi pukakapiki maunga horo nuku pokai whenua kitanatahu, which translates into English as "the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'landeater," New Zealand's longest place name.

"People told me this was the best rally yet," organiser Trevor Beale said. "It was a great day, with the only hold up a river crossing in the morning."

Tararua District mayor was on board with Mr Beale, along with 85 other people in 39 vehicles and like them, she loved every minute of the rally.

"I've booked my seat for next year," she said.

This year the rally took a different route and included spectacular views across Tararua's landscape and an awe-inspiring coastal scenery.

Rally regulars: Tom Pinfold, left, and Wayne Hermansen, heading across country.

"People couldn't believe the views," Mr Beale said.

In previous years the rally proceeds have gone to the Herbertville rural fire crew, but this year they will be split between the Herbertville Hall, Dannevirke St John Ambulance Health Shuttle, Ti Tree Point Playgroup and Weber School.
