A Hawke's Bay police officer has been charged with dangerous driving causing injury after crashing his rare hot-rod in September.

Flaxmere Constable Shane Greville was off duty when his black Chevrolet Camaro was involved in a collision with another car at 6pm on September 27 along Napier Rd in Havelock North.

An internal police investigation was conducted after a female driver was injured and taken to hospital as a result of the incident.

Greville appeared in Hastings District Court today and entered no plea to one count of dangerous driving causing injury, police said.

The matter was adjourned until January 7. No name suppression was requested by his lawyer Jonathan Krebs.

It is understood the officer paid $89,000 for the slick black 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, which he had purchased just three weeks before the crash.

Greville remains on restricted duties pending the outcome of his court appearance and a subsequent employment investigation.

"My only comment would be to reassure the public that this matter has been treated like any other crash that we attend," Road Policing Senior Sergeant Greg Brown said. "It is up to the Court to determine the outcome."
