A Latvian national who has been in custody more than eight months since allegedly stabbing two people and a dog at a Flaxmere address will spend up to another five months in jail pending a trial.
Appearing in the Napier District Court last week via audio-visual link from prison, theman was further remanded by Judge Geoff Rea for a trial tentatively set for March 20.
The man faces two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one of cruelty to an animal as a result of an incident at a property in Flaxmere Ave on the night of February 21.
Himself injured in the events that followed, he was taken to hospital where at a bedside court sitting two days later he was remanded in custody without plea for an appearance in March, when he was further remanded for psychiatric assessment.
It was reported at the time of the incident that neighbours were alerted when they heard women screaming at the address.
One man who came to their aid tackled a bleeding man and helped subdue him until police arrived, and dog was seen fleeing with a knife still embedded in its back.
Having undergone psychiatric assessment, the man has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The women were not seriously injured, and the dog, a 10-month-old red nose pit bull cross and children's pet named Honey also recovered.
