As crowds make their way along the Mitre 10 Mega Walk tomorrow, they will be joined by a large group who feel the walk's cause is close to their hearts.

A team of 18 involved with the child health unit at Hawke's Bay District Health Board will be "putting our best feet forward" to help CanTeen.

Support from the event empowers young people with cancer and helps them realise they are not on their own, with more than $100,000 raised for the organisation in six years through the fundraiser.

Group spokeswoman Sally Rudzevecuis said they had decided to join in because the walk "fitted so nicely with our child health work".

The team aims to improve the health of the population as a whole, and improve the health of individuals and their families/whanau within that community.

"We just want to support our families in our community, promote healthy exercise whilst having fun," she said.

"It's nice as a community to give something back. When the profits go back to Hawke's Bay it makes it even more special."

After hearing about the walk, Ms Rudzevecuis - who has never taken part - said she had put the word out to their team.

"All it takes is one person to give them a nudge," she said.

As well as members from the unit, some members' husbands and children had been "roped in" to take part in the 6.5km walk. With about 50 people in the child health unit, located throughout Hawke's Bay, Ms Rudzevecuis said she was sure their team - based at the Napier health centre - would join up with others also doing the walk.

"We're the Napier effort for our wider Hawke's Bay child health team," she said. "This is a nice activity and it's great to be able to bring kids along as well."

While they would all be dressed in orange, Ms Rudzevecuis said they had not organised any team costumes.

"We didn't get that carried away."

Instead, they will join the sea of orange on Sunday, where participants will do either the 28km mega walk and run, or the 15km, 6.5km, or 3.5km versions.

"It's such a great cause," she said. "Hope to see a huge wave of orange on the move on Sunday, all ages at all stages of fitness."
