One man is dead and another missing after a fishing trip in Hawke Bay went wrong.
A major search was under way today over several hundred kilometres of the coast after four Napier and Hastings men failed to return from a fishing trip yesterday.
Gilbert Kemp, Pana Keefe, Chris Pardoe, all in their 40s, and Waiariki Taoho, believed to be 18, went fishing in a 4.7m open boat yesterday about 3pm after finishing work at the Fresh Meats abattoir in Pandora.
The men had not returned from a diving expedition to Pania Reef, about 2km east of the entrance to the Port of Napier. Search and rescue controller Senior Sergeant Mike Wright said one man had been found dead about 3-4km off Awatoto, and another two had been found alive. There was no sign of the fourth man or the boat.
"We don't know who the dead man is yet," Mr Wright said. There were 20 vessels and an aircraft involved in the search.
All the men were believed to be wearing lifejackets or bouancy aids, Mr Wright said.
A friend of the men, Wayne Spark, was one of a group of 20 concerned friends and family members to have gathered at the men's vehicle and boat trailer at the Hawke's Bay Sport Fishing Club at 6am this morning.
"They're experienced divers. They go regularly. I just hope they've been blown away," Mr Spark said.
Mr Spark, a boyhood friend of Mr Kemp, Mr Keefe and Mr Pardoe said they would have gone out "for a feed of mussels", with probably two of the men diving and the other two remaining on the boat.
"They had a radio on the boat. So this is totally unexpected," Mr Spark said. Their boat trailer and two vehicles were today still at the carpark at the Scapa Flow entrance to the Napier inner harbour.
"We understand they were expected back by nightfall," Mr Wright said, but they never returned and police were alerted this morning.
The Hawke's Bay Volunteer Coastguard was called and was searching the area with a light aircraft and its own NIYAD rescue craft.
