BY the age of 12, he was conducting an imaginary orchestra with a pair of knitting needles - now Paul Potts is a household name.

Before Britain's Got Talent made him an internet sensation and global superstar, the singer was a phone salesman - almost too shy to set foot on stage.

His first audition for the show has became one of YouTube's most popular videos, with more than 15 million people tuning in to see the unassuming tenor's spine-tingling rendition of Nessun Dorma.

Today, he has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues in front of sold-out crowds, but life could have been very different had he ignored an opportunity which arose in 2007.

"I stumbled across a pop up window on my computer for Britain's Got Talent, I wanted to close it - I thought I was too old or too fat and I have a great face for radio," Potts said.

"I did a coin toss and it landed on heads - some people say that's fate."

Commitment and hard work have seen him release of three albums - One Chance, Passione and Cinema Paradiso - with another in production.

"The process is fairly familiar, for the third album I decided to consult with labels about direction bit the final choice of music is mine, it's a really difficult process getting the right number of tracks, the right combination of music - some things we expected to work, others didn't," he said.

"I don't think there's anything we wouldn't touch, there's some really classical stuff, also some songs from folk and pop, I'm always happy to sing in different languages too, there's English, French Italian and more Italian."

The past eight years have also brought back-to-back shows throughout the globe - 500 to be precise - and there's no sign of letting up.

"I still enjoy it, but it makes me nervous, I think you need those nerves, it keeps you on edge, if you stop being nervous it's not a good thing. I'm a perfectionist, I hate giving what I consider to be a bad performance, it's always a challenge."

He will be in New Zealand this month accompanied by an orchestra and supported by soprano Anna Hawkins - audiences can expect a bit of everything, from early works to brand new pieces and a few surprises.

"All the recording is done, it just requires final touches, I hope to do some things from my next album on the tour, some songs from my previous recordings, some songs that aren't on any album - I think it's important to play things that haven't been recorded."

He will perform in Hawke's Bay for the first time at Napier Municipal Theatre on Tuesday - though Potts was already schooled up on the region's wine growing prowess.

"I have not done anything there before, but I'm hoping to bring a camera and explore, there are some really good shiraz and merlot blends from Hawke's Bay, I think my timetable is going to be quite tight but I'm trying to figure out a way to try some of the local wines."

His Kiwi adventure coincides with the cinematic release a self titled biopic, based on his rise to fame which follows on from a recently released, deeply personal book, One Chance: A Memoir - endorsed by Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan - two of the Britain's Got Talent judges responsible for his discovery.

Potts had plenty to be thankful for and was overwhelmed by the chances he had been given since winning the talent seeking show.

"All the travelling I really love, I have seen some wonderful places, I am always being surprised by things - I still love what I do."
