Movie review: Cuban Fury (M)

Lying somewhere between Strictly Ballroom (1992) and Run, Fatboy, Run (2007) is this British comedy built around a dance floor.

Featuring the talented and funny Nick Frost and Chris O'Dowd, Cuban Fury is the very British story of young salsa dancing protege Bruce Garrett (Nick Frost).

Bruce, with his dancing partner sister, had the world at his feet as a teenager.

He loved to dance salsa and he was very good at it.

That was until older bully boys beat him up and forced him to eat his own sequins.

In an instant, Bruce lost his love of dancing and threw away his shoes.

Fast forward 25 years and an overweight Bruce is hardly a magnet for the girls.

He is drifting through life with little going his way except too much takeaway food.

But when a new boss arrives at work - Julia (Rashida Jones) - Bruce is besotted.

When he discovers her passion is for salsa dancing, he knows there is only one way to win her heart.

A rather large obstacle lies in his way - alpha male workmate Drew (O'Dowd).

Drew is everything that Bruce is not - handsome, smooth-talking and good with the girls.

If Bruce wants to get his girl he must embrace the salsa again and find a way to get to know Julia while keeping Drew at bay.

Some of the most entertaining moments in Cuban Fury centre around the salsa world Bruce re-enters.

The characters involved are colourful in their attire and their personalities.

It is their ability to let themselves go that encourages Bruce to find the passion he thought he had lost forever.
