Matariki or Aotearoa's New Year festival is signalled by a small star cluster which appears in the north eastern pre-dawn sky during late May and early June.

Celebrations often begin at the next new moon after Matariki has risen, and continue to be rolled out in Hawke's Bay.

From a community market to decadent dinner and educational events - there are still plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy midwinter.

Hastings City Matariki Night Market

WHERE: Hastings City Centre

WHEN: Tomorrow, 5pm to 8pm

WHAT: Hastings city will be transformed into an exciting destination for the whole family as organisers celebrate Matariki with a night market.

On hold for the winter, the popular market is back with lighting displays, cultural performances, live entertainment, food and craft as well as late night shopping.

The Matariki Dinner

WHERE: Ten Twenty Four

WHEN: Friday, 6.30pm to 11pm

WHAT: Celebrate "New Zealand Thanksgiving" with Matariki Wines and Ten Twenty Four during a five-course degustation dinner created by chef Kent Baddeley.

Try wine matches such as Matariki Wines' flagship Quintology and their 30-year celebration blend, Taurus 2007 A Celebration.

Matariki Wairoa

WHERE: Wairoa Community Centre

WHEN: Friday, 5pm to 8.30pm

WHAT: Get along to celebrate the finale of Matariki events in Wairoa, with a huge family concert.

There will be a kids karaoke contest, bands, singers, Kiwi kai and a spectacular fireworks display over the river.

Matariki at MTG

Matariki is time for bringing family together, celebrating and remembering the past.

MTG Hawke's Bay is hosting a range of family-friendly events and activities for a a gold coin, so everybody can join the fun.

- Matariki Story Time: 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm (for ages 7 and under).

Parents and children can book into one of three Matariki Story Times for a classic kiwi storybook and sing-along.

- Whanau Constellation Activity: from 11am to 3pm

Turn your family into a sparkling constellation to add to the MTG's window of stars.

Constellation Jar Workshop: from 2.30pm (ages 7 to 12).

Children can create a galaxy of shining stars inside a jar.
