Hastings City Art Gallery has presented many established and emerging, local, national and international artists in the Alcove and Foyer galleries, including popular work The cubic structural evolution project by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson last year.

Other artists that have been shown in the Alcove and Foyer include Rangituhia Hollis, Ann Verdcourt and Hawke's Bay based artists Asaki Kajima and John Eaden.

The gallery is now calling for proposals from artists to exhibit their work in these galleries for next year's programme.

Hastings City Art Gallery is a free entry, civic gallery that programmes high quality, relevant visual arts exhibitions in response to the local, national and global arts scenes.

Alongside these are rich arts experiences for the community, including public events, workshops and free interactive learning sessions for school groups.

"We really feel that arts education together with strong relationships within the local arts community are key to the progression of the team's strategic vision," says director Toni MacKinnon.

Until May 31, exhibition proposals will be accepted from artists interested in exhibiting in the foyer and/or alcove.

Proposals should include a description of the project, with visual support material and preferred dates. Exhibition length is generally about seven weeks, to fit in with the gallery's timetable.

This is an exciting opportunity to participate in the dynamic 2018 exhibition line-up, and to exhibit in a regional public art gallery with a solid reputation in the sector.

Local artist John Eaden says, "The foyer is a lovely space, with natural lighting from the large windows. The intimacy of the alcove offers the chance to work on a different scale and is also a great space to present video work."

Proposals will be considered by a panel, members of which come from the Hawke's Bay arts community.

Successful applicants will be notified in July.

If a proposal is accepted to become part of the 2018 schedule, the gallery will support the artist through every stage of the exhibition process. This includes the provision of curatorial advice and writing, marketing and publicity, design support and installation.
