Hugo Chang held its first Winter FAWC event in collaboration with Wellington restaurant WBC.

Hugo Chang held its first Winter FAWC event in collaboration with Wellington restaurant WBC.

You don't necessarily need to channel mutton dressed as lamb to attend this uniquely themed ball.

The event will see locals dressed to the nines for an evening of food, wine and entertainment at Central Hawke's Bay Municipal Theatre in Waipawa on Saturday night.

It is one of the last chances for a knees-up, F.A.W.C! style, as the winter series draws to a close - with almost solidly sold-out events this weekend.

There are still a few places left at the country-style ball and at $65 a ticket there is plenty to get excited about, including a complimentary tipple on arrival.

Those after a more interactive experience should head along to East Pier to try their hand at Food for Thought.

It is a quiz night unlike anything you have seen before - with food and wine thrown in for good measure. There will be blind tasting, while teams of six share an antipasto platter and first drink.

The schedule finishes with a flourish at Te Awa Winery's sold-out Winter Warmer Wind Down over a hearty Sunday roast featuring local produce at the cellar door.

There are wine matches with lunch and live music from 12pm to 2pm.

The final events of the month follow last weekend's packed schedule. Hugo Chang was transformed last Friday for their hugely popular event, WBC and HC in HB, which sold out in just 24 hours.

It was a collaboration of all Havelock North folk know and love about the local, made even better with a flavour injection from Wellington's WBC restaurant - otherwise known as Wholesale Boot Club.

Asian fusion dishes included seafood, dumplings, tender duck, pork and noodle salad with international flair - matched to a vast selection of top New Zealand wines.

But there was more to the event than first met the eye - behind both successful establishments is the Toomer name.

Clay Toomer owns WBC, while Bay-based brother Clint co-owns Mamacita and Hugo Chang - alongside business partners Liv Reynolds and Nick Neilson.

It was Clint who suggested bringing the two together and Clay was up for a challenge, bringing WBC Head Chef Tom Hutchinson along for the ride.

"The styles of the restaurants do marry up with each other so we thought it would be quite a good thing to do," Clay says of the event. It's really nice to move out of our immediate circle, we have a catering company so we do travel, but the nicest thing is working with other people and family for one but other teams as well and getting involved with other communities."

There were elements of the WBC menu "mixed up" to suit the space and style of winter F.A.W.C!

Clint hoped the collaboration would become an annual occurrence.
