Hawke's Bay businesses finding compliance requirements an issue are increasingly turning to ex-ACC auditor Gordon Anderson.

He and his wife, Jan, run Hasmate, a business based on a computer program that ticks all the bureaucratic boxes so businesses can get on with business.

"A lot of companies run with a system of silo management. They employ 10 people with 10 different spreadsheets," he said.

"If one leaves or goes on holiday, the company is left with a problem. The logic of spreadsheets is the same but the logic of people running them is quite different."

Hasmate brings all that organisation together and makes it easy to interpret.

"Compliance is here to stay. There's taxation, employment relations, health and safety, training, asset management, the Resource Management Act and chemical management.

"It saves time; a huge amount of time. All those people fiddling about on computers."

He started the business six years ago and built it up on the back of his consultancy work. It now boasts some of Hawke's Bay's biggest companies and councils as clients with many winning business industry awards thanks to Hasmate.

He said the regulatory climate was getting tougher.

"The Labour Department have been told by the Government that their role is not education, it is now strictly enforcement."

Mrs Anderson has managed the documentation of 22 logging contractors for eight years, most contracted to Pan Pac.

One contractor in particular spread the word about the value of Hasmate. He was offered a new contract but needed proof his 22 drivers were certified. She was able to deliver all training records, certifications and copies of driver licences within 30 minutes.

Should there be an accident the quick access to paperwork would be invaluable.

Mr Anderson knows all about accidents in a regulatory environment, he once broke his leg while attending an ACC conference.

But spreading the good word beyond Hawke's Bay is proving difficult. All of his clients, including the multi-million-dollar ones, are based in Hawke's Bay.

He has good leads in the logging industry. "Forestry is the best-performing sector when it comes to improving health and safety," he said.

He is determined to grow the business and is considering taking on a partner.
