FLYING KIWI: There’s no mistaking California’s famous Huntington Beach Pier in the background as New Zealand’s Tom Robinson competes in an under-16 boys’ heat at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships.

GISBORNE teenager Saffi Vette has moved into round 4 of the under-18 girls’ division at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in California.
In a dramatic round 3 heat at Huntington Beach, Vette was the beneficiary of two priority interference calls — on Hawaiian Zoe McDougal and Brazilian Isabella
Saldanha, who was leading the heat at the time.
The calls meant the pair only get scored on their best ride, not their two highest-scoring rides.
Vette, who already had a 4.33 score on the board, managed a 2.47 ride in the dying seconds of the heat, which proved good enough.
