POVERTY Bay-East Coast came agonisingly close to a shock victory in round 3 of the Toro men's national interprovincial golf tournament in Invercargill this morning.
PBEC lost 3-2 to Bay of Plenty in a team match decided by the No.1 players. The teams were locked 2-all, thanks to wins to
PBEC No.4 Andrew Higham - 2 and 1 over Jordan Golding - and No.3 Peter Kerekere - 4 and 3 against Sam Davis.
With No.2 William Brown going down 4 and 3 to Landyn Edwards and No.5 Eddie Brown jr falling 6 and 5 to Henry Spring, it was left to PBEC No.1 Nathaniel Cassidy and BoP's William Howard to decide the outcome.
Howard sneaked home 1-up to inflict a third consecutive defeat on the country's smallest golfing province. It was the first match of the tournament for Brown jr, who replaced player-manager Tony Akroyd.
PBEC faced Manawatu-Wanganui this afternoon.
