PatutahiTHE Brown Bombers launched a Sunday assault on Patutahi’s open opening day tournament.

Eddie Brown Junior, younger brother Hukanui, father Eddie (Whata) Senior and the boys’ cousin Jace Brown filled the top four places in the men’s stableford.

Eddie Jr won with 3-under par 67-6-61, for 45 points. His round, one below his lowest score at ’Tahi, featured seven birdies and a shank on the 14th hole which led to a double bogey.

Hukanui went even lower — a personal best-equalling 65-2-63, for 43 points, that included six birdies and a lone bogey.

Eddie Sr had 13 pars in his 76-12-64, for 42, while Jace Brown was fourth with 71-6-65, for 41.

The Brown brothers are in the gorilla category when it comes to driving but Jace Brown made them look like bunnies with his long drive-winning effort — a 320-metre blow from tee to green on the par-4 seventh. His cuzzies were 20m in arrears.

The Canadian mixed pairs stableford was also a family affair, Tom Hindmarsh and daughter Anahera Stills-Hindmarsh winning with 44 points.

Tolaga Bay couple Mark and Ginger Watts were second on 43 and Patutahi’s Wayne Baty and Sheree Gray were third on 42.

Poverty BayHIS first sub-par round. Now for one in the 60s. That’s the next mission possible for Glenn Morley after a career-best performance on Sunday.

The former Poverty Bay representative cricketer, now hooked on golf, stormed home over the Bay’s famous final six holes to shoot 1-under 71-7-64.

A round in red figures at the Bay had been top of his “to do” list but after going out of bounds on the par-5 12th and making double bogey, it was looking like the wait would continue.

Morley responded with birdies on the 14th, 16th and 17th holes as he played the last six — all par-4s — 3-under. That included a pressure-filled sand save on the last for par.

Morley’s 44 points won him the division 1 men’s stableford and he capped the day with a two and the approach on the sixth.

Don Griffin impressed in testing Saturday conditions. He won the division one men’s stableford with 78-11-67, for 41 points.

Stefan Andreassen carded even-par 72 last Thursday to win the division 1 stableford with 41 points.

Peter Humphreys was a man possessed in a front nine of 2-over 38 on Thursday. The back nine kept it real, 49, although he still put together 87-21-66, for 42 points, to win division 2.

If every dog has its day, then Chris Duncan’s was Sunday. Duncan defied his 18-handicap with 76 off the stick, easily his best round on the NZ Golf handicap website and 21 strokes lower than the Sunday before.

Odette Thompson won the women’s stableford on Monday with 96-27-69, for 41 points.

Clark followed it up with a birdie-2 on the 14th in his 76-18-58, for 44 points.

It was just enough to win on a day of excellent scoring. Nelson Truman also had 44 points, but missed out on countback, while Hiria McClutchie and Roly Smith were a point back.
