GISBORNE Thistle is to field a team in the 2016 Central Federation Premier League.

Jags chairman Ron Young told The Herald yesterday the club committee unanimously decided to make the step up. The team will be coached by Fred Robertson, with Liam Ryan his assistant.

The decision comes after Team Gisborne’s announcement it would not be fielding a side in the Pacific Premier League.

“We feel that Gisborne is looking for this sort of thing,” said Young.

Team Gisborne winning the Pacific League three out of the past four seasons was a good build-up but it was now felt the players needed to go to a higher league, said Young. “The players will be excited about it . . . as well as the general public.”

Young also announced that long-time Thistle club man Grant Thomson had been appointed the club’s director of coaching.

A muster is to be held at Childers Road Reserve at 6pm on January 28. Young said any player who wanted “a crack” at the higher league was welcome to turn up.
