Five teams played in the competition for those with less than eight years of bowls experience.
Poverty Bay’s Luke Sanders and Ngawai Turipa beat Kahutia’s Lucy Shanks and Mike Howes 15-13 in the final.
In the early rounds, Poverty Bay beat Kahutia 13-12 and lost to Wairoa 12-11, then beat Wairoa 22-8.
Kahutia made the final by beating Wairoa 19-7.
This was the first success at “under-8” level for Sanders. He shows real promise, and more time practising will help him achieve further success as he moves through the ranks.
THE Kahutia team of Mick Maunder, Alastair Macpherson and Ray Young won the centre champion of champions open triples at the Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s greens.
Poverty Bay members made their all-weather facility available at short notice as the greens at the Gisborne club were too wet for play.
Kahutia beat Te Karaka’s David File, Bruno Lourie and Lofty Hurrell both times they met.
Young was good up front and Macpherson backed him up well, while Maunder did enough to keep his nose clean.
In the open women’s competition, Poverty Bay’s Jan Powell, Erin Sutherland and Kath Carroll had two good wins against Kahutia’s Glenys Whiteman, Francie Adair and Dayvinia Mills to take the honours.
In the women’s under-8 competition, Lucy Shanks, Diane Oates and Paige Richter did enough to win. It was Richter’s first success at under-8 level.
In the men’s under-8 competition, Tolaga Bay’s Murray Duncan, Anton Tashkoff and John (Hone) Burema went through unbeaten.
