Bay lose game and Kirk Cup

HAWKE’S Bay reclaimed the Kirk Cup with a 10-wicket win against Poverty Bay in Napier yesterday.

Batting first, Poverty Bay were bowled out for 98. The home side reached their target without loss.

“We made a good start, after Sam Tallott was out with only two runs on the board to a tough delivery that got big on him quick,” Poverty Bay coach David McDonald said.

“Sean Dykes (15) and Scott Tallott (17) took the score to 40-1 before Scott played the only loose shot of his innings.

“Then from 40-1 we slumped to 40-4 before Josh Bates (28) and Thorn Parkes (9) mounted a 52-run fightback to take us to 91-4 in the 26th over.

“After Thorn was out at 92 and Josh followed, we finished up all out for 98.

“We probably let ourselves down by being impatient in our batting, after being sent in on a day when batting conditions were not easy and against a sharp, fast and accurate bowling attack.

“It was a turnaround from last season’s encounter when we had the rub of the conditions.”

The Bay’s next game is a Northern Districts Fergus Hickey two-day match against Waikato Valley at Harry Barker Reserve on November 28 and 29.

Then they have the one-day tournament in Taupo in December.
