Self-belief will be the message aimed at youth at the Waitangi Whanau Day Out on Thursday, February 6.
Held at the Gisborne Soundshell, the free concert will feature soul singer Louis Baker, hip-hop artist Scribe, The Witch Doctor and a hip-hop, soul, funk and rock band of top musicians, includingEast Coast Music Ltd founder Tyna Keelan, soul singer Bella Kalolo, dub/reggae performer Israel Starr and rising hip-hop stars Church & AP.
Local acts Superfly Killa, East Coast Breevaz, and DJ Murdarah will also perform as part of the alcohol-, drug- and smoke-free whanau event.
Free buses will be available from Kaiti Mall and Elgin.
Vendors will be on-site providing healthy kai options but the public is welcome to take a picnic.
“We have come out of Tuia 250 and this has given space for real historical stories to be shared on the first encounters,” says Te Runanga o Turanganui a Kiwa E Tu Whanau project manager Athena Emmerson-Kapa.
“This has given opportunity to create a Waitangi Day, calling it Waitangi Whanau Day Out — a free concert themed whakapono (belief) with artists who encourage our rangatahi to believe in themselves.”
