THE total fire ban across the district ended on Wednesday and has been replaced by a restricted fire season.
This means permits will now be available for fires in the open in the city and rural areas.
The total ban was introduced in mid-December as the fire risk climbed steadily, but fire authorities now have confidence that sufficient rain has fallen recently to ease back to a restricted season.
Fires remain prohibited on all of the region’s beaches.
“Anywhere else, a fire permit will now be available to light a fire in the open,” a Gisborne District Council spokesman said.
