Great work Naomi and Kainga Ora in addressing our local housing crisis (Sept 27 story). Partnering up with iwi and Maori housing organisations is a fantastic concept, enabling whanau to get into affordable housing.
Intensification/more homes on smaller sections is the best solution — the “quarter-acre section” is a thing
of the past. The new-age family of working parents doesn't require big lawns and gardens any more!
Unfortunately, the St Mary's block on Childers Rd would have been an ideal area for public housing; close to schools, sporting venues and the beach. Was this site not in contention?
Also, renting-to-own housing should be made possible to those who are keen, giving whanau some responsibility and ownership in their new whare. Hopefully it would also reduce damage and destruction, which sadly happens.
