The Poverty Bay dog trial centre was well represented in the final of the Tux North Island and New Zealand Yarding Challenge last weekend but the national title went to Northland's Murray Child.

The event was held at the Waikato Centre in Taupo.

Noddy Halley and Lad (95.75 points) qualified for the North Island finals by finishing runner-up in the Waikato event.

Also in the North Island finals were Gisborne triallists Bob Bryson and Bolt, Rod Mead and Gum, and Merv Utting and Fern.

They all had solid runs but did not make the top three to qualify for the New Zealand final.

Murray Child and Boy from Northland took out the New Zealand title with a run that scored 97.75 points.

Waipaoa Cadets Penny Wilson and Liz, and Luke Jamieson and Turbo qualified for the North Island maiden/novice final with Penny and Liz fifth on 84 points, and Luke and Turbo sixth on 54 points.

In the Waikato Centre results, Luke and Turbo were third on 91 points.

In the “Handy Dog” results, Poverty Bay dog trial president Colin Bayliss and Colt had a good weekend.

They were the only Poverty Bay qualifiers in that competition and finished fifth in the Waikato Centre component on 95.75 points.

They went on to win the North Island “Handy Dog” title with a run worth 99 points, and were fifth in the New Zealand final with 94.75 points.

Romney ewes were used for the event.

They were well presented and gave all the competitors a chance, with credit going to Aratiatia Station, Taupo, who provided the sheep and grounds.
