For the second year in a row Eastland Group has awarded scholarships to five of the region’s most promising engineering students as they head off to university.

Each year, Eastland Group offers one or more scholarships to students from across Tairawhiti who are studying civil, mechanical, electrical or chemical and process engineering, through its tertiary engineering scholarship programme.

“After awarding a record five scholarships in 2018, we’ve done the same again in 2019,” Eastland Group chief executive Matt Todd said.

“The calibre of applicants was, as always, outstanding. These particular students all showed strong academic achievement, character, commitment and leadership qualities, and I congratulate them all on their hard work.

“The aim of these scholarships is to help local students fulfil their potential on a national or international scale, and go on to successful careers in their chosen industry.

“We also hope that one day, some of them may return home and contribute to the future success of our region.”

The winners of the $5000 scholarships are Kezia Evans, a first year student studying electrical engineering at the University of Canterbury, Bradley Clark, a first year student studying chemical and process engineering at the University of Canterbury, Kelsey Coronno and Reid Williams, both previous recipients, received scholarships again in 2019.

They also gained paid work experience over the summer — Kelsey at Eastland Network and Reid at Eastland Port.

Kelsey is studying electrical engineering at the University of Auckland, and believes that receiving the scholarship encourages her to work harder.

Reid, who is continuing his studies in mechanical engineering at the University of Canterbury, thinks the financial support is invaluable.

“Receiving this scholarship seriously helps relieve the financial stress behind being a full-time student. The scholarship is also helping me gain work experience with Eastland Port and complete my practical engineering hours.”

A special merit scholarship of $2000 was also awarded to Ben McNeil, who left Gisborne Boys’ High last year and is beginning a BE (Hons) at AUT.

“Engineering has been an interest and passion of mine since year 11,” he said.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity and support from Eastland Group to help me achieve my goal of becoming a mechanical/mechatronics engineer.”

Applications for the 2020 scholarships will be open from September.
