GISBORNE dog triallist Rod Mead and Gem finished runners up at the dog trial championships at the Central Hawke's Bay show at Waikpukurau on Saturday.

Mead had three dogs qualify for the 15 dog final run off. Sheena Martin from Wairoa had two dogs in the final.

"The sheep were very challenging," a trial spokeswoman said.

"The weather played a big part in their scale of 'naughtiness', with cold icy winds, cold rain then bright sun."

Hawke's Bay triallist Bob Bruce and Susan won it on 98 points, with Rod Mead and Gem second on 96.

Mead and Lad finished seventh, and his dog Bob was 12th. Martin and Grand finished third on 95.5pnts and her dog Punk was ninth.
