TWO under-age boys will enter Rhythm and Vines tomorrow and no one will kick them out. Gisborne’s own One and a Half Men are scheduled to play the supertop at 4pm on New Year’s Eve.

The Campion College band consists of Liam Wallace, 17, and Ronan Wallace, 13. This year they won the recorded music solo/duo award at the national Smokefree Pacifica Beats final, playing to their biggest crowd yet. Tomorrow’s crowd will be even bigger.

“How many 13 year olds can say they have been to Rhythm and Vines?” says Ronan.

“When we found out we had been booked I couldn't sleep, we were so excited.”

The boys have a distinct alt-rhythm and blues sound and have been tasked with warming up the crowd before R&V’s own Hamish Pinkham takes the stage.

They had to audition via a video clip for the slot, after R&V partner Toby Burrows saw them play at this year’s Show. He says he was “blown away” when he heard the boys.

“I thought they were just amazing and super-talented. When I saw how young they were I was in awe. They are really charismatic and humble too.”

Mr Burrows says he knew they could handle a set at R&V.

“They have a lot of personality and they are definitely going places.”

Liam and Ronan have not been taking the opportunity lightly. They are grateful and have been practising for four-plus hours a day, for their hour-long, 16-song set.

“We are playing about seven of our own original songs and some covers — everything from Ed Sheeran’s I See Fire, to Bob Marley’s I Shot the Sheriff,” says Liam.

“We just want to do it for the love of it but having a paid gig is awesome.”

Their ever-increasing resume has changed a lot in the past couple of years. It was not that long ago they were busking every weekend on the main street.

“If you put the hard work in, you can do anything. We are just so excited.”

Both can play a variety of instruments, but they will play their set acoustically, paired with their signature riffs and harmonies.
