ENVIRONMENTAL CHOICE: Hexton Bee Company won a people’s choice award for best small stand at this year’s Spring Gift Fair in Auckland. Picture supplied

GISBORNE’S Hexton Bee Company were a hit at the 2018 Spring Gift Fair in Auckland, taking out the 2018 People’s Choice Awards Winner for best small stand.

The company displayed their natural, reusable and compostable beeswax wraps for the first time at the three-day event in Auckland.

With more than 400 exhibitor stalls, retail buyers go to source the newest products and discover the latest trends.

Hexton company owners husband and wife duo Martin and Sally Crisp said winning the award was unexpected.

“It was voted by the customers so it was great to have such a positive response to our products.

“We took up beekeeping as a hobby four years ago but it soon became much more than a hobby and possibly an obsession,” they said.

The couple did a lot of research into the beneficial products bees produce and made a commitment to creating products with ethical and sustainable methods.

“In this modern world where everything is mass-produced, we like to slow down and create each of our products by hand, one at a time,” the couple said.

“Our wraps are a totally natural alternative to traditional single-use cling-wrap.

“The bee industry is very interesting and challenging.

“It benefits a lot of people from fruit growers, pastoral farmers and farmers with hard country growing manuka, as well as the people that use the healthy products bees produce,” Mr and Mrs Crisp said.

What are beeswax wraps?

— Eco-friendly and re-usable food wraps are ideal for wrapping perishable foods such as cheese, cut vegetable, avocados, fruits, sandwiches and anything you used to wrap in plastic.

— Made with all natural ingredients.

These include pure New Zealand beeswax from sustainable hives, tree resin, 100 percent cotton and jojoba oil. This combination of ingredients creates a wrap that can be used over and over again.

— The warmth of your hands moulds the wrap around your food or dishes.

— They are ideal for cheese, cut vegetable, fruits, snacks and anything you used to wrap in plastic.

— The wraps can also be used as a place mat or eating surface when out and about.

— Wraps can last up to a year or more depending on care and use.

— Gently hand wash the wrap in cold water with a little eco friendly detergent if necessary then hang up to dry or blot carefully with a tea towel.

— Do not use hot water as this can cause the beeswax to melt and your wrap will not be as effective.

— They can be rolled or folded and stored in a drawer away from heat and direct sunlight.

— The wrap can be put in the fridge or freezer but ensure you let the wrap defrost slightly before you unwrap as the frozen wax can crack.
