On Matt and Cath Carter’s seven-hectare orchard at Ormond, they grow navel and valencia oranges and a handful of other citrus, such as blood oranges, lisbon and meyer lemons and finger limes.

On November 28 they will feature on TVNZ 1’s iconic Hyundai Country Calendar.

When they bought the orchard in 2010, the trees were in poor condition with sooty mould smothering the leaves, and ivy and blackberry running wild among the fruit, the couple said.

All advice was to remove the trees and start again, but the Carters decided to prune heavily and try to rehabilitate the trees, and it worked.

They nurtured their on-site juicing business and their fresh Hill Road orange juice recently won gold medals at the Outstanding New Zealand Food Producer Awards in 2021.

They deliver their juice weekly to many cafes and restaurants around Gisborne and are adding new outlets each week.

Matt and Cath are regulars at the Gisborne Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings, selling fresh juice along with oranges, lemons and the occasional punnet of blueberries, provided their two young boys Harry and Jack have not eaten them all first.
