The weather gods have conspired against Gisborne Tatapouri Fishing Club for the second consecutive major contest.

The club today confirmed tomorrow's opening day of the Liquorland Marlin and Tuna tournament has been called off.

However, club president Roger Faber said conditions for the remainder of the competition from Friday to Sunday looked to be “brilliant”.

“Rather than send people out in a dodgy southerly tomorrow we cancelled that. The briefing still goes ahead tonight for skippers or one representative from each boat. Due to Covid restrictions we only want one person from each boat at the briefing and we'll see what happens to lockdown and we'll make a call on the Friday night prizegiving along the way but we will definitely fish if we stay at level 2.”

Mr Faber said there should be some big fish to catch for the expected 400 anglers due to take part in 100 boats.

Tomorrow's cancellation comes after the cancellation of the annual Bay Bonanza fishing competition, disappointing nearly 500 anglers at the start of the month.
